The Top Five Mid-Value Off- Road Vehicles

Off - Road Vehicles or SUV's as they are known come in many variants, some of which can't traverse a gravel road, without having to go to the service center the next day. In this list we are going to look at those vehicles that can actually go off - road and not become stuck in the first unpaved road they encounter.

Topping the list is the Land Rover Defender, she isn't much to look at, but she has been carrying military personal and civilians over some of the toughest terrain on earth for many years. First built in 1983, and without much change in exterior styling, the Defender has been a work horse for people who have to travel over rough and uncompromising terrain across the world. Presently sold with a range of options in engines, the Defender does not look great, but has the power and the suspension to handle very rough terrain. With her rough and unsophisticated looks, the Defender looks similar to the environment it seeks to subdue.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a close second, mainly due the creature comforts that are available in it. The Lexus LX 470 and 570 are both based on this model of the Land Cruiser, sharing the same chassis, and other basic styles. The Land Cruiser comes with a range of engine and transmission options. This along with its high ground clearance enables it to travel quite comfortably on rough roads and terrains. The reliability of the Land Cruiser has been demonstrated over a number of years, with safari operators saying they last forever, with the least amount of problems. This reliability is, if not better than the Defender, is probably on the same level.

The Jeep Wrangler based on the work horse of World War Two, the Jeep, by way of its civilian counterpart the Willys Jeep, is third in the list. Built by Chrysler, the Wrangler takes in the remarkable qualities of its pedigree, in its sense of exterior styling, the ability to travel over rough terrain and still be remarkably workable in the roughest conditions. The present variant comes with a range of two types of petrol engines, and three types of transmissions. The body comes in soft top, hard top, with an option of either two doors or four doors.

The Land Rover LR4, was first sold in 1989, as a larger, more comfortable version of the Defender. The LR4, is a five door SUV, compared to the three door Defender. With three engine options, including the five Lt V8 petrol Jaguar engine, and a six speed manual or automatic transmission, the LR4 is well suited to handle rough roads and terrains. Loaded with a lot more creature comforts, and features when compared to the Defender, the LR4, is a slightly more expensive model. A cleaner, smoother exterior, gives a better image when driving down the road, but it is also capable to traversing the harshest terrains.

The last SUV on this list is probably the best looking, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, has been in production since 1993, and has won countless awards since its inception. The smooth, clean, racy lines of its body, is very different from the other SUV's in the list. The full option Grand Cherokee is also probably the most expensive vehicle on this list. The five doors, SUV comes with an extensive range of option for the engine, transmission and internal features. It can easily travel over hostile terrain, with the least amount of problems. But is at the end of our list, due to the price and it does not have the fan following as the rest of the other Off Road vehicles in the list.
